Born out of failure, after watching our intelligent and people-loving, non-verbal adult son with autism get treated as if he had nothing to offer by multiple “trained providers”, we knew we had to make a change.
The system supported Collin’s needs throughout his school-age years with proactive and energetic teachers who partnered with Collin’s support team. But once he graduated high school there was a void - the ‘adult day care’ service providers set the bar low for what constitutes a successful day.
We’ve witnessed and experienced what Collin is capable of when he’s working with someone who believes in him and who facilitates communication - he’s taken gen-ed courses, done volunteer work, gone to social events and “prom” dances, and shown an eagerness to learn, play, share, and be a part of it all. Compare that to when he’s working with someone who doesn’t know any of this is possible, and he can spend several hours sitting on a couch while watching Disney videos on his iPad.
Having been a part of this special community for a long time, we know many other families who have shared a similar experience - young adults who want to participate but who require additional facilitation to do so.
There’s a whole generation of kids young adults who are slipping through the cracks, day by day, as we write these words.
It’s time to do things differently, to make a difference, for this special population and their families.
