What can we accomplish together?
And how long will it take?
First, some definitions…
Who do we serve?
And who helps us serve them?
Beacon
Definition: a guiding signal or symbol, either literally as a source of light or figuratively as a source of inspiration, hope, or direction for others. Just as a physical beacon warns ships of danger or guides them to safety, a figurative beacon (a person, idea, or place) provides guidance, encouragement, and a sense of hope in challenging times.
Here at LITE House, our Beacons are those we serve - usually non-speakers with autism, who guide our principles and serve as our inspiration.
Navigator
Definition: a person who directs the route or course of a ship, aircraft, or other form of transportation, especially by using instruments and maps.
Here at LITE House, our Navigators are those who help our Beacons explore more social interactions, volunteer and vocational opportunities, and live more engaging and fulfilling lives than they otherwise would have.

There is a significant gap in training between the current industry standard of care of “being generally friendly, helpful, and not doing any harm” and the care this population needs which includes facilitation, communication channels, assuming competence, and engagement.
The Navigators we train, the more help our Beacons get - even from people they already spend time with. This delivers big “bang for buck” because these people are already spending several hours per day with our Beacons (in some cases) - we can change this to be much more productive time.
Goal #1: Training
Let’s increase the number of people who can help our Beacons navigate various social settings.
Goal #2: Opportunities for meaningful social, vocational, volunteer, and recreational activities.
These Beacons should have opportunities to participate in fulfilling activities - without their parents being their only hope to navigating these scenarios.
-
Expand the number of Beacons we are able to support.
Expand the number of Navigators available to support our Beacons.
Acquire / Develop a “home base” - a place where our Beacons and Navigators can get together and hang out between activities (or as an activity.)
Expand the frequency and size of events and support we are able to provide to our Beacons.
Expand our outreach and support network to the point where our long-term goals can become a possibility.
-
Parents are the primary caregivers for most adults who are non-verbal and with autism. But parents aren’t going to be around forever - or even able to provide care past a certain age.
LITE House seeks to own a home, and then multiple homes, where our beacons can Live Independently, Together - with highly trained support staff to help navigate engagement and communication throughout the day.
The Beacons and Navigators will spend their days as similarly as possible to you and I - with a combination of working/volunteering / providing-value to the community, and social engagement, and educational opportunities - learning and/or teaching someone else. Mix in some physical exertion and a good meal and they’ve had another great day.
